1973年，一对热爱旅行的夫妇在厨房餐桌上创作完成《lonely planet》(《孤独星球》)的第一本自助游指南书。四十多年来，《孤独星球》已成为世界上最成功的独立旅行信息提供商之一，被称为旅行者的“自助旅行圣经”。　　2006年，《孤独星球》进入中国市场。在《孤独星球》评选出的2014年世界十佳旅行目的地中，湖南成为唯一入选的中国省份。《孤独星球》评价说，无与伦比的风光，丰富的文化底蕴，这个省份的确得天独厚。

孤独星球（Lonely Planet）是世界上最大、最权威的自助旅行指南出版社，由托尼·惠勒、莫琳·惠勒夫妇于1972年在澳大利亚墨尔本创立。出版社目前有350多位签约旅游作者，创立至今共出版了20多种类型600多款主题图书，在全球200多个国家和地区销售，年销售达700万册。

1970年10月，伦敦商学院的在读MBA托尼·惠勒和初到伦敦的爱尔兰女子莫琳在伦敦摄政公园的一张长椅上不期而遇，一见钟情的两个人在一年后结婚。新婚不久的他们离开伦敦开始了穿越欧亚大陆的旅行，并在一年后抵达澳大利亚。很多想要自助游的人们开始咨询惠勒夫妇各种问题，最后惠勒夫妇决定出版一本旅行手册。
